ChatGPT introduces "Study Mode": AI helps students learn, not cheat

OpenAI has introduced a new feature in ChatGPT: Study Mode. This tool helps students work through problems step by step by offering guiding questions instead of immediately providing finished answers. This is a response to the problem of using AI for cheating. OpenAI calls Study Mode "the first step on a long road to improving learning in ChatGPT."

According to OpenAI's Vice President of Education, Leah Belsky, one in three students already uses ChatGPT. To guide this audience in the right direction, the company has developed a new mode focused on assisting with homework, preparing for exams, and mastering new topics.

The development was conducted in collaboration with teachers, academics, and students. Study Mode is based on special instructions that encourage active participation and self-reflection. For instance, after receiving a question, ChatGPT can suggest breaking the problem down into several stages and then ask the student to formulate the answer in their own words.

Study Mode operates on interactive prompts, which include guiding questions and personalized support. It can be turned on and off at any time, giving students flexibility in achieving their academic goals. Experts believe such functions are an important step toward more effective use of AI in education.

The new mode is already available to users of the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. It will be released on ChatGPT Edu in the next few weeks.
