Uzbekistan and NACAG discussed prospects for cooperation to reduce emissions
26.02.2025 | 04:25 |The progress of the project to reduce nitric acid emissions in Uzbekistan and further plans in this direction were discussed by a delegation led by head of the secretariat of the German Climate Action Group on Nitric Acid (NACAG) Thorsten Brezina and employees of the Office for the Coordination of the Transition to a Green Economy and Development. UzDaily.uz reports on the meeting of the parties, which took place at the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the country.
NACAG representatives presented a brief overview of current measures to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions at the country's enterprises engaged in the production of nitric acid, and also spoke about the planned initiatives within the framework of the project. The meeting discussed the introduction of nitrogen oxide emission monitoring systems at chemical industry enterprises. In this regard, NACAG expressed its readiness to provide support in the development of long-term measures to control nitrogen oxide emissions, the integration of the sector into national climate strategies, as well as the installation and operation of emission reduction technologies on a free basis. Following the meeting, the parties agreed to intensify cooperation.
The Nitric Acid Climate Action Group (NACAG) was established at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference and is supported by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). It aims to promote the implementation of effective technologies to reduce nitrogen oxide (N₂O) emissions in all nitric acid plants worldwide. To this end, NACAG offers technical, political and financial support to eligible partner countries, and partner countries are encouraged to take responsibility for the sustainable reduction of emissions in the future.
As noted on the NACAG website, the Group offers governments and plant operators advice and information on technological and regulatory aspects of N₂O abatement. In addition, financial support is provided for the procurement and installation of emission reduction technologies to countries eligible for official development assistance.
This financial support is provided on the condition that partner countries take full responsibility for their reduction activities – for example, through their Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. Partner countries’ commitment to emission reductions ensures the sustainability of the activities initiated and the long-term transformation of the sector.
