Amanmuhammet Khommadov wins the Turkmenistan Chess Federation Cup
09.10.2024 | 02:30 |A student of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Education and Sports, candidate master of sports Amanmuhammet Khommadov won the main tournament of the Turkmenistan Chess Federation Cup, which was held from October 3 to 8 at the Specialized Chess and Checkers School in Ashgabat. Having scored 9.5 points out of 11 possible, Amanmuhammet also increased his Elo rating to 2290 points and came very close to the title of FIDE Master (2300 Elo). In September 2024, Khommadov, as part of the national team, won gold medals in Category B at the 45th World Chess Olympiad in Hungary.
Another player of the youth team of Turkmenistan– Ashgabat native, candidate for master of sports Akhmet Gubatayev, who was half a point behind Amanmukhammet also performed well and took second place. Akhmet increased his Elo rating by 92 points and was able to cross the 2200 mark. The experienced FIDE master Mergen Kakabayev, who scored 8.5 points, rounded out the top three.
Among the girls, the best result was shown by a promising chess player from the Lebap region, a member of the national women's team of Turkmenistan, 14-year-old Jahan Rejepova, who scored 6.5 points. The second and third best results were shown, respectively, by Jahan's peer Myahri Agamuradova and champion of Turkmenistan among girls in 2024, candidate for master of sports Meryem Agajanova, who also scored 6.5 points, but lost on additional indicators.
The girls competed in the same general group with men, which could not but affect the accumulation of valuable experience in participating in strong tournaments. Like Khommadov, Rejepova and Agajanova returned from the recent World Olympiad with a team gold medal in the women's category C.
In addition to the main medals, tickets to the 2025 Turkmenistan Premier League were played out in the Federation Cup tournament. Akhmet Gubatayev and Myakhri Agamuradova were awarded these tickets because Khommadov and Redzhepova, who had preceded them, already had the right to participate in the next major league.
In parallel with the main tournament (category A), a tournament was held among players with a rating below 1700. Yunus Jorayev, a schoolboy from Lebap, who scored 9.5 points out of 11 possible, won in category B. Half a point behind the winner were the national rapid champion among boys under 12, Didar Baltayev and Burkhan Yegenkuliev (both from Lebap), who took 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.
Among the girls, the best result was shown by Nurana Dzhumaniyazova and Aiya Bayramova (both from Lebap), who scored 8.5 points each. The top three was closed by a schoolgirl from Ashgabat, Aysha Ashirova, who scored 8 points.
On October 8, after the end of the tournament with classical time control, the rapid tournament started. On October 10, the blitz tournament will take place, where the arrival of the legendary chess player from England, the contender for the world crown in the match against Garry Kasparov in 1993, international grandmaster Nigel Short is also expected.
50 chess players took part in the classical tournament in category A, and 235 in the tournament B. In 2023, a total of 287 players participated in the Fed Cup, the СFT noted.
