The flame of the Paris 2024 Games was lit in Ancient Olympia
18.04.2024 | 09:47 |100 days before the start of the Olympic flame of the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024, was lit in Ancient Olympia in Greece.
The ceremony was attended by President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, President of the Organizing Committee of the Paris 2024 Games Tony Estanguet, head of the French National Olympic Committee and IOC member David Lappartien, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo.
In his speech, Thomas Bach emphasized the power of sport to make the Paris Olympic Games a symbol of human excellence and unity.
Now about 600 torchbearers will carry the flame through dozens of cities and archaeological sites in Greece before arriving in France. On April 26, the flame will be handed over to the organizers of the Paris 2024 Games at the Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens, site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
On May 8, the fire will be delivered to the city of Marseille, after which it will travel to about 400 cities in France and some of its overseas territories (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, French Polynesia, Reunion and New Caledonia). On July 26, the Olympic flame will arrive for the opening ceremony in Paris.
