Kazakhstan will "double" the railway to China and increase its capacity by 5 times

"Kazakhstan Railways" (KTZ) will purchase 108 thousand tons of rails, more than 1,500 sets of sleepers and fasteners. The equipment will be used to duplicate the Moynty-Dostyk railway, which connects Kazakhstan with China via Alashankou.

The components, all manufactured in Kazakhstan, are sent to assembly bases, where rail and sleeper grids are mounted, and then the finished sections will be delivered to the installation sites.

Currently, 170 kilometers of the 836 kilometers of the Moynty-Dostyk railway have been prepared for laying the track, the KTZ stressed.

The Dostyk-Alashankou railway border crossing plays an important role for trains running between China and Europe. This border crossing is currently under a restricted regime: trains going from China to various Central Asian countries are redirected through the Altynkol-Khorgos railway border crossing.

It is expected that the "doubling" of the Moynty-Dostyk railway, which is to be put into operation in 2025, will increase its capacity five times, KTZ stressed.

In addition, KTZ is exploring additional opportunities for cooperation with the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB). Last week, Chairman of the EDB Board Nikolay Podguzov mentioned the construction of another railway that will connect Kazakhstan with the Chinese border, from Ayagoz to Bakhta. This will mean that a third railway border crossing will be built between the two countries. The EDB is ready to finance the feasibility study of this project through a grant through the Technical Assistance Fund. Kazakhstan is the main recipient of the Bank's investments, which has already invested more than 5 billion euros in 104 projects.
