Azerbaijan and Georgia unfreeze LNG Terminal construction project for Caspian region
24.11.2022 | 19:40 |Azerbaijan and Georgia have resumed work on a project to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal for its further export to the countries of the European Union, TASS reports.
The project, previously frozen in 2015, involves the supply of gas from the Caspian region in order to further liquefy it on the territory of Georgia and export it to the Eurozone countries — Romania, Hungary and then to Western Europe.
"This project, unfortunately, has been suspended... However, based on current events, when Europe is particularly interested in alternative sources of gas supply, everyone is talking about the diversification of energy supplies, this project has become particularly relevant this year," said Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
Earlier it was announced that the main topic of negotiations between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili was the implementation of this project.
The Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation and Azerbaijan's State Oil Company SOCAR, as well as Romanian and Hungarian partners, will participate in the project. At the same time, before that, Azerbaijan and Romania also agreed to build a complex of LNG terminals to strengthen Trans-Black Sea cooperation.
The strengthening of the Trans-Black Sea and Trans-Caspian energy supplies will contribute to the diversification of the European energy market and will give a new impetus to the development of the economies of the states concerned.
