Production has commenced at the world's largest metamorphic rock oil field in Bohai Bay

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has announced the commencement of production at the world's largest metamorphic rock oil field, known as Bozhong 26-6, located in Bohai Bay. This was reported by Xinhua News Agency.

This deposit is located approximately 170 km from Tianjin and has an average depth of about 20 meters. At the first stage of development, 33 wells are expected to be put into operation, 22 of which will be production wells. Peak production is projected to reach 22,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2025. The total proven oil and gas reserves at the field exceed 200 million cubic meters.

The project represents a significant achievement for CNOOC, which is the largest offshore oil and gas producer in China. The first phase of the project was commissioned on February 9, 2025, and includes the construction of a central processing platform and an unmanned wellhead platform. This project will not only increase hydrocarbon production in the region, but also help reduce carbon emissions, as it is planned to bury about 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide over the entire period of operation.
