Building a "Smart home": tips for setting up a system for a comfortable life

The smart home system is gaining more and more popularity. Although still not everyone knows what it is and how it works. In this article we will analyze — what are the features of the system, how to manage it, what technologies it has and why it is needed in principle.

"Smart home" is the automation of household systems, thanks to which routine tasks no longer irritate and do not tire. Home devices are capable of performing actions and solving certain everyday tasks without human intervention.

The advantage is that it is a flexible system that a user sets up independently according to the own needs. The owner decides which devices to install and what tasks they will perform.

What can be in a smart home?

A smart home can include a digital video surveillance system, a security and fire alarm system and access control, lighting control and climate control, water supply, gas and electricity supply, a home theater, a multiroom (control of kettles, robot vacuum cleaners, kitchen machines, lighting, projectors, television and other multimedia devices).

What does it look like in everyday life?

The number of tasks that can be performed automatically is practically unlimited. After all, up to 300 devices can be connected to some systems. For example, the light turns on/off automatically, the kettle boils, the TV turns on when a certain program starts. With the help of a smartphone, you can disconnect devices (TV, iron, night lights) from smart sockets, use special sensors to find out about a malfunction of equipment (for example, if a washing machine leaks), look after children, etc.

"Smart home" not only makes life easier and saves nerves, but also saves money. At first glance, it seems that the system requires large investments: to buy smart sockets, sensors, cameras. However, the benefits from this are tangible. For example, a smart socket can track how much energy a device connected to it consumes, so you can calculate the most voracious devices and save on paying bills. It will also be possible to save money by preventing trouble, for example, by preventing neighbors from flooding thanks to the water sensor in the bathroom. In general, the installation of a "smart home" is an idea that fully justifies itself.

How to automate housing and why is it worth doing?

Making your home smart is easier than it seems. Most systems are so simple that you can handle them yourself without the help of technical specialists. What is worth buying if you want to "upgrade" a dwelling, but it is not clear where to start:

  1. Control Center

Perhaps this is the first thing you need to buy if you are serious. The control center will allow you to interact with all purchased smart devices. With its help, you can create work scenarios for the technique. For example, if you leave home, you start the appropriate mode. The lights are switched offin the rooms, the curtains are closed, the appliances are turned off from the sockets.

  1. Mobile application

The control center works in conjunction with a free mobile application, so it is easy to control it from a smartphone. You can even give commands by voice.

  1. Sensors

Protect the house from intruders, flood, fire, and gas leakage. The temperature and humidity sensor will monitor whether it is too hot in the apartment and inform the control center about it, and that will send a signal to the air conditioner. The opening sensor will be useful to parents if there are drawers at home where the child should not look categorically. And if you attach a sensor to the door, you can monitor whether the child came home from school on time.

  1. Cameras

What does the child do, what does the pet do, is everything all right with elderly parents — a smart video camera will answer each of these questions. A street video camera will be useful for car owners. With its help, you can even easily find out if there is a parking space near the house.

  1. Smart sockets

A real find for everyone. Sockets execute commands — de-energize the devices operating from it. Dimmer sockets allow you to adjust the brightness of the lighting. The socket that measures energy consumption will tell you which device consumes the most electricity.

  1. Smart technology

Air conditioners, robot vacuum cleaners, kettles, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. With the help of a smartphone, you can control the equipment and integrate it into everyday work scenarios.

The only drawback of any system is the lack of a standard that would work with all smart home devices. It is impossible to combine equipment from different manufacturers (for example, Samsung and Phillips) under one roof independently. To solve this problem, you need the presence of technical specialists and complex actions.

Despite this, it is worth saying that this is definitely a system of the future, but which is already available today. It is not necessary to buy everything at once, you can start small: install a pair of controlled sockets and lamps, a smart kettle, several sensors. After the benefits of the devices are obvious, you can proceed with a full setup. After all, more and more large manufacturers offer gadgets, goods, equipment that can be included in a smart system and make your home more comfortable and safe.
