Turkmenistan Implements New WTO Standards to Attract Sustainable Investment

Ashgabat held a seminar, during which representatives of Turkmenistan's ministries and agencies began studying and assessing their needs under the World Trade Organization's Investment Promotion for Development Agreement (IFDA).

The event was organized by the International Trade Centre (ITC) as part of the "Turkmenistan: Trade Sustainability and Integration" project, funded by the European Union.

IFDA: A New Standard for a Green Economy

The IFDA, which was signed in February 2024 by more than 120 WTO members, is an important international instrument. Its key goal is to attract sustainable and high-quality foreign investment by increasing regulatory transparency, making the investment environment predictable, and simplifying administrative procedures.

The seminar was led by Professor Manjiao Chi, an international consultant at the ITC and Director of the Center for International Economic Law and Policy at Peking University Law School. Under his leadership, approximately 30 Turkmen specialists analyzed existing national measures and identified priority steps necessary to fully comply with the principles of the new standard.

Implementing reforms based on IFDA principles will significantly increase Turkmenistan's attractiveness to foreign capital, including for green economy initiatives, thereby creating conditions for strengthening the country's position on the international stage, based on its commitment to economic development and integration into the global trading system.

About the project: The ITC project "Turkmenistan: Trade Resilience and Integration", funded by the European Union, aims to promote economic development and decent work in Turkmenistan by improving the business climate and increasing the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises.
