Mark Carney elected as next Prime Minister of Canada

Mark Carney, the former head of the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and, therefore, the country's next Prime Minister. He received 85.9% of the vote.

Carney was the only candidate for the post of party leader who was not part of the government of his predecessor Justin Trudeau. In his speech after his victory, Mark Carney focused on the need to protect Canadian interests.

With significant experience in economics, he promised to focus on improving the country's economic situation and prepare for the upcoming elections, which could be difficult for the Liberal Party.

Former Finance Minister and current Member of Parliament Chrystia Freeland came in second place with 8% of the vote. Former House Leader and current Member of Parliament Karina Gould came in third with 3.2% of the vote.
