Driver's licenses for operating vehicles with manual transmissions may disappear in Sweden
07.01.2025 | 12:28 |There is a possibility that driver's licenses for operating vehicles with manual transmissions may disappear in Sweden in the coming years.
According to AZERTAG, this is due to the global transition of the automotive industry to electric vehicles, which are typically equipped with automatic transmissions.
Over the past decade, the number of Swedes obtaining licenses to operate vehicles with automatic transmissions has increased by 600%. As a result, the Swedish Transport Administration faces challenges in organizing examinations, as car manufacturers are gradually ceasing production of models with manual transmissions. Currently, only six models suitable for examinations are available in the country.
From 2035, the European Union plans to ban the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines, which may ultimately lead to the disappearance of manual vehicles. However, experts believe that for certain categories of drivers, such as emergency services or the police, the need for driver's licenses for manual vehicles will remain. The future of driver's licenses for manual vehicles will depend on new EU regulations, which are expected to determine their fate.
