The creation of an international platform - the Caspian Environmental Initiative - was discussed in Ashgabat

The Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan on the Caspian Sea held its 62nd meeting on Sunday, July 28. The meeting at the Foreign Ministry was attended by the relevant deputy chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers, heads and representatives of a number of ministries and relevant departments.

The agenda of the meeting included a discussion of the Caspian Environmental Initiative, put forward by President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the plenary meeting of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Caspian Environmental Initiative is intended to become a new international platform for substantive and professional cooperation on a wide range of issues related to the protection of the Caspian environment, the preservation of its biological resources, and the resolution of a number of pressing environmental problems.

A separate topic of discussion was the organizational issues of holding events for the Caspian Sea Day, which is celebrated annually on August 12.

The meeting participants noted that Turkmenistan has been taking a proactive position for many years in developing balanced solutions to Caspian issues and has played an important role in developing the legal framework for cooperation in the Caspian Sea. This process is currently ongoing in cooperation with all Caspian countries within the framework of international law, the Foreign Ministry press release says.
