 USAID, in collaboration with UNODC, conducted a seminar for Turkmen journalists

On February 27-28, a training seminar on ethical reporting by journalists of issues related to global challenges was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The event was organized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Safe Migration in Central Asia program and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Representatives of public and private media, television, public organizations, as well as teachers and students of the Department of Journalism of the IIR and IUHD took part in this event.

During the seminar, international experts presented best practices and strategies for journalism, and also spoke about new approaches and successful practices in the field of covering global challenges and issues. The purpose of the training was to improve knowledge and skills in preparing publications in the media and social messengers related to such vulnerable groups of the population as drug users, victims of human trafficking and illegal migration.

Experienced journalists from Uzbekistan and leader of the “Youth Regional Network of Youth Organizations and Leaders for Change in Central Asia, for a Society Free of Drugs and Crime” from Kazakhstan, Zhandos Aktaev, were involved in the training, who will share his unique and interesting experience in using widespread messengers in preventing the use of psychoactive substances and combating drug trafficking.

During the seminar, issues of media ethics in covering issues of safe migration and the fight against human trafficking, standards of journalism, language and style of sensitive coverage of issues of migration, human trafficking and their exploitation, signs of harmful information disseminated through social networks were also discussed.

Participants discussed ways to combat negative trends that can distort reality and confuse public dialogue.

This seminar provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and in-depth study of current issues in modern journalism for effective coverage and contributing to the formation of informed public opinion. Such events play an important role in improving the skills of journalists and promoting ethical standards in the media.
