Why Kazakhstan revived a holiday that had not been celebrated for 13 years
27.10.2023 | 02:40 |Republic Day is one of the most important holidays in the modern history of the multinational people of Kazakhstan. It is celebrated annually on the day when the Declaration of State Sovereignty was adopted in 1990, which became a fateful step of Kazakhstan on the way to the birth of a new independent republic.
In honor of this event (however, not immediately, but five years later) in 1995, Republic Day was declared a national holiday, and in 2001 it acquired the status of a state holiday. But unexpectedly for many, eight years later – in 2009 – the decree of the president was excluded from the list of official holidays of Kazakhstan.
Last year, this holiday returned to the people of Kazakhstan, thanks to the fact that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed to revive the Republic Day. And the deputies of the Senate of the Parliament, without postponing this decision, in the same year 2022, at the legislative level, secured the status of a national holiday for this holiday.
Therefore, Republic Day was celebrated for the first time after a long pause last year. Celebrated widely and solemnly. And, as eyewitnesses say, it is fun and joyful, as a truly popularly beloved holiday.
In addition, this year, many events were timed to the Republic Day. About five thousand of them were held in the Akmola region alone. New facilities were put into operation, concerts and sports competitions, creative contests and scientific conferences, flash mobs and exhibitions, as well as charity, patriotic, volunteer actions were held. In a festive atmosphere, awards were presented to distinguished representatives of various professions, and keys to apartments were given to happy new residents.
Republic Day was celebrated not only in Kazakhstan, but also in friendly countries. Including in Turkmenistan.
A solemn reception in honor of the Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held at the Yildiz hotel in Ashgabat, where leaders and representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations and numerous friends of this country gathered.
In his festive speech, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan Askar Tazhibayev said:
"Kazakhstan, as a peace-loving and open state, implements a multi-vector and pragmatic foreign policy, which means the development of friendly, equal and mutually beneficial relations with all states, both in bilateral and multilateral formats, comprehensive interaction with interstate associations and international organizations, makes a significant contribution to the formation and implementation of the global and regional security agenda, cooperation and development".
In his congratulatory speech, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Tangrykuli Atahalliyev stressed that "Republic Day is a bright holiday designed to strengthen statehood, strengthen unity and solidarity of the multinational people of Kazakhstan. Over the years of independence, the country has achieved tremendous success in building a modern, forward-looking state that occupies a worthy place in the international arena today."
It is impossible to ignore the fact that opening the event with the National Anthems of the two friendly states, Turkmen musicians and vocalists performed an official song in the language of the fraternal people, personifying the state sovereignty and national unity of Kazakhstan.
In addition, Ambassador Askar Tazhibayev called this national holiday of the Kazakh people "the day of revival of the centuries-old tradition of Kazakh statehood. And this day, when the dream of the ancestors came true, can rightfully be called historical."
That is why this popularly beloved holiday in Kazakhstan was revived, established in honor of the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty, which became the first and, of course, a fateful step of Kazakhstanis on the way to the creation of an independent republic.
