The US Department of Energy will allocate $ 1.2 billion to expand direct air capture (DAC) projects to clean it from carbon dioxide, writes Reuters.

Carbon dioxide filtration centers will be launched by Oxy and Climeworks. According to their statements, they have developed innovations that can reduce the cost of technology to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The plans are to reach a level below $100 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent before the end of the decade. Climeworks hopes to launch the project in 2025-2026.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm says carbon capture technology will help achieve the government's goal of cutting carbon emissions to zero by 2050. Scientists at the UN have calculated that to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement - limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius - billions of tons of CO2 would need to be removed from the Earth's atmosphere every year.

The company claims that their project, after full commissioning, will reach a capacity of 30 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere per year. The filtered carbon dioxide will be stored in underground storage facilities for use in the manufacture of concrete and aviation fuel.
