CGTN: how different countries celebrated the Lunar New Year
26.01.2023 | 11:02 |Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar, which came on January 22, is widely celebrated not only by the inhabitants of the Celestial Empire, but also around the world. According to CGTN, Canada, Brazil, Great Britain, Italy and other countries also congratulate each other on the Spring holiday these days.
Thus, the Chinese New Year parade in Vancouver is one of the largest in the country and has a ten-year history. According to the organizers, this year more than five thousand people took part in the solemn procession, and the number of spectators exceeded hundreds of thousands.
"I was born in Vancouver, and I used to participate in the parade many times as a spectator, but this year I decided to take part in it myself for the first time," John Todd, a participant in the parade, shared his impressions.
A concert "Merry Spring Festival – 2023" was organized in the capital of Brazil with the participation of Chinese Ambassador to Brazil Zhu Qingqiao, representatives of the Chinese community, as well as members of the Brazilian government. Speaking to the audience, Brazilian Minister of Culture Margaret Menezes expressed hope that in the coming year the cultural ties between the two countries will gain a new meaning.
The traditional Chinese lion dance, which is a popular folk dance performance in China, was performed on the main Trafalgar Square in London. The same dance to live music on traditional Chinese instruments was also demonstrated in the capital of Colombia.
Residents of Milan could see congratulations on the Spring holiday in two languages at once, which were projected on a large screen in the city center. The guests were also introduced to the traditional Chinese art of paper cutting — the jianzhi technique. Among the representatives of the Celestial Empire, it is a symbol of New Year's holidays.
Congratulating the residents on the holiday, Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala noted that this will be the beginning of a harmonious and happy year.
Another Italian city, Turin, also celebrated the New Year according to the lunar calendar. The tallest building in northern Turin, the Mole Antonelliana, was illuminated in bright red, which is the symbol of the country, and a Chinese hieroglyph meaning "happiness" was projected on it.
The celebration of the Chinese New Year will last until February 5.
