The Volga-Caspian Sea Canal to be deepened by order of the President of the Russian Federation

On the Volga-Caspian Sea Shipping Canal, dredging will begin in 2023 to ensure the optimal passing draft of vessels of 4.5 meters. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Cabinet of Ministers and the government of the Astrakhan region to implement this project jointly. The corresponding document is published on the Kremlin website.

The navigable canal connects the section of the Bakhtemir River - the main branch in the Volga delta and the Caspian Sea through the shallow part of the Volga delta in the Astrakhan region. Vessels passing through this section often run aground. The order must be completed by December 25, 2023.

The document also refers to the inclusion of the seaport of Olya in the special port economic zone created on the territory of the Astrakhan region. In addition, the architectural design and construction of the building of the marine station in Astrakhan must be completed.

It should be noted that the sphere of transport and logistics is a priority area of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Astrakhan region. At present, the parties are developing joint projects to open the Olya-Turkmenbashi car ferry line. Representatives of the Agency for Transport and Communications of Turkmenistan expressed their readiness to provide their vessels for establishing a regular route between the seaports of the two countries.
