The President of Turkmenistan proposed to strengthen the role of diplomacy for agreements on the Caspian Sea

The mechanism of regular consultations under the auspices of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs at the level of special representatives of the Caspian states is designed to provide conditions for the interaction of state bodies of the five countries. This point is reflected in the communique adopted in 2018 at the previous summit in Aktau.

Speaking at the VI Caspian Summit in Ashgabat on Wednesday, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov spoke in favor of expanding the powers of this cooperation mechanism, entrusting it with coordinating the development of sectoral agreements.

In this aspect, the Turkmen leader noted the special importance of completing the work on the agreement on the methodology for establishing direct baselines in the Caspian Sea.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov also spoke in favor of holding regular meetings at the level of heads of foreign ministries on priority areas of the five-sided agenda.

The Head of State noted that experts from the Caspian countries are preparing joint documents in the field of combating poaching, illegal drug trafficking, navigation safety, search and rescue at sea, and together with gratitude to all participants in this process expressed hope that work on these documents will be completed in the near future.
