Sea freight along the North-South transport corridor will double in 2023

Freight turnover at checkpoints of the international transport corridor “North- South” increased in 2023 by 18% compared to 2022. At the same time, in maritime transport it doubled. Such figures were made public at an extended meeting of the board of the Federal Customs Service of Russia (FCS), portnews.ru. writes.
Freight turnover along the East-West corridor increased by more than 10%, and in road deliveries in this direction it doubled.
According to the Federal Customs Service, the share of transit declarations completed electronically has reached 99%.
Head of the Russian Ministry of Finance, Anton Siluanov, named the main tasks for 2024: creating effective logistics corridors with friendly countries, reducing the inspection time of freight transport at the border to 10 minutes. In addition, Russia plans to expand the circle of friendly countries with which international agreements will be signed to increase trade turnover and speed up control procedures, etc.
The international transport corridor “North-South” is a multimodal route with a length of 7.2 thousand km that will connect St. Petersburg with the ports of Iran and India. It is being built as an alternative to the sea route connecting Europe, the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal. The western and eastern branches of the ITC pass through Iran: the western branch provides for transportation across Iran by road through Rasht, the eastern branch by rail. The final point of the route in Iran is the port of Bandar Abbas, from which cargo can be sent to India by sea. In addition, the route has been developed with the possibility of direct sea transportation from Russia across the Caspian Sea to Iran.
