The Government of the Russian Federation ratified the Protocol on the protection of the Caspian Sea from pollution

The document was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
“The Russian Foreign Ministry is to notify the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the depositary of the Protocol on the Protection of the Caspian Sea from Pollution…,” the document says.
The Parliament of Azerbaijan approved the Protocol on the Protection of the Caspian Sea from Pollution in 2014. The Parliament of Turkmenistan ratified this protocol to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea in 2015, the Parliament of Kazakhstan - in 2021.
The purpose of the document is to prevent, reduce, control and, to the extent possible, eliminate pollution of the marine environment from land-based sources and land-based activities.
The document provides for the adoption of regional and national programs or action plans based on measures to control pollution sources. In addition, a regular assessment of the state of the marine environment and coastal areas of the Caspian Sea, an assessment of the level of pollution of the sea along its coastline is being fixed.
The Protocol refers to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) signed in November 2003 by representatives of the five Caspian countries: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. This is the first legally binding agreement ratified by all littoral states, which defines the main directions for regulating the anthropogenic impact on the marine environment, protection and reproduction of the biological resources of the Caspian Sea, as well as procedural issues of joint decision-making by the littoral states.
On August 12, 2006, after ratification by all the Caspian countries, the convention officially entered into force. The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water, not connected with the oceans, which has a climate-forming value.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, speaking at an international conference on the Caspian on August 12 in Avaza, expressed hope that the Conference of Foreign Ministers of the Caspian states planned this year on the initiative of the Russian Federation would be held before the end of the year.
The minister spoke in favor of including in the agenda of the upcoming meeting the definition of a platform for developing measures to improve the environmental situation in the Caspian Sea.
