The EU initiated negotiations to simplify obtaining a Schengen visa

The EU member states have agreed to launch negotiations on the digitalization of the process of obtaining a Schengen visa for citizens of all states, which is expected to be completed by 2025.
The changes are aimed at making it possible to apply for a Schengen visa online, replacing the current visa sticker with a digital document. The innovation will also reduce the risks associated with theft and forgery of visa stickers.
Thus, it is planned to create a single platform through which everyone will be able to apply for a Schengen visa. On the website, a person will be able to provide all the necessary information, download electronic copies of documents, and also pay fees.
The platform will also inform the owner of the questionnaire about the final decision on their application.
Digitalization of the procedure for obtaining a Schengen visa will reduce the number of trips to consular services, since personal presence at the consulate will be necessary only for those who submit documents for the first time, persons whose biometric data is already invalid, as well as persons with a new document for foreign travel.
Currently, all applicants for a Schengen visa must pass an interview and submit a number of documents, depending on the type of visa they are applying for.
Those wishing to obtain a tourist Schengen visa must provide a completed application form, a passport, two photos, a round trip booking, and a confirmation of the reservation of a place to stay. The package of documents also includes the availability of medical insurance for travel to the EU.
