Woven City: Toyota launches first smart city
12.06.2025 | 15:30 |This autumn, Toyota is set to inaugurate Woven City, the world's first experimental smart city, located at the base of Mount Fuji. The objective of this innovative project is to establish a unique environment where robotics, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence seamlessly integrate into daily life.
Constructed on a 175-acre site of a former factory in Shizuoka Prefecture, the settlement will serve as a testing ground for advanced future technologies. The initial inhabitants will comprise approximately 100 Toyota employees and their families, with the population gradually expanding to 2,000 residents.
Woven City is meticulously designed: driverless e-Palette electric vehicles will provide transportation, and roads are segregated for pedestrians, cyclists, and robotaxis. Buildings are equipped with sensors, energy will be supplied by hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels, and water recycling and waste management systems are implemented to maximize environmental sustainability. Robotic assistants and artificial intelligence will manage household tasks, monitor residents' health, and optimize resources. Every structure and service is interconnected to facilitate data collection and infrastructure development.
Currently, the city remains closed to tourists; however, Toyota intends to open it for visitation in 2026. The world watches as Woven City transitions into a tangible reality.
