Exhibition of Turkmen Carpets Opens in Romania

On March 25, 2025, an exhibition of carpets entitled "Heavenly Beauty – The Turkmen Carpet" opened at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest.

The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Romania in conjunction with the State Association "Türkmenhaly" in commemoration of the "International Year of Peace and Trust" and the 30th anniversary of the permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan.

The event was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Romania, members of Parliament, heads of ministries and departments, rectors of leading higher education institutions, academic intellectuals, museum staff, as well as Turkmen students studying at educational institutions in Romania, and representatives of the media.

At the solemn opening ceremony, addresses were delivered by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO Affairs, Chynar Rustamova; the State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture of Romania, Diana Baciuna; the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Romania, Annamammet Annayev; and the General Director of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant, Virgiliu-Ştefan Niţulescu.

In their remarks, it was noted that Turkmen carpets have consistently enjoyed significant demand as objects of immense artistic value and exquisite exotic luxury. Their oldest examples are exhibits in museums, exhibition halls, and art galleries in numerous countries. Inspiring admiration among connoisseurs of beauty, the Turkmen carpet continues its triumphant journey across the globe, having become the "calling card" of the Turkmen people, who have carried the secrets of this unique art through centuries and millennia.

The handcrafted creations of Turkmen female artisans, both in ancient times and today, are a subject of universal admiration. The Great Silk Road, which once traversed Turkmen land and left an indelible mark on world history, played a significant role in the dissemination of these refined carpets, equated with works of art.

Currently, this ancient route is being revived, finding new embodiment in the development of multifaceted trade and economic ties between countries and regions, while the art of carpet weaving, organically combining the rich traditions of national heritage and modern technologies, is being imbued with new content.

Emphasizing the special place of the Turkmen national art of carpet weaving in the treasury of universal human values, the speakers noted that confirmation of this was the decision to include it in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, adopted at the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, held on December 12, 2019. Undoubtedly, the recognition by UNESCO experts of the traditions of Turkmen carpet weaving as part of the great cultural heritage of the entire world will further promote this national brand abroad and its widespread popularization.

The significance of the activities of the State Association "Türkmenhaly" was also noted.

The speakers highlighted the immense personal contribution to the popularization of the original traditions of ancient national art made by the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. As noted in the books of the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, "Living Legend" and "Heavenly Beauty" dedicated to the national art of carpet weaving, elevating the glory of handmade carpets across the planet serves as a source of inspiration for carpet weavers.

Thanks to the translations of these remarkable works on the eternal beauty of handcrafted carpet creations, imbued with immense love and respect for the millennia-old culture of the native people, into various languages, the whole world has rediscovered the art of Turkmen carpet weaving.

The exhibits include artistic paintings and unique national jewelry reflecting the cultural heritage of the people. Carpets and carpet products from the museum's rich collection, exceptionally rare in their artistic value and perfect technique of execution, occupy a prominent place. Each carpet presented at the exhibition is impeccable in quality and magnificent in appearance.

The exhibition in honor of the Turkmen carpet at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest will be open to visitors until March 31st.
