Chinese Researchers Achieve Green Hydrogen Production

A team of Chinese researchers has achieved a record-breaking solar hydrogen production efficiency of 10.36%, which was maintained for more than a month, paving the way for large-scale green hydrogen production, green energy information portal QAZAQ GREEN reported, citing Chinese sources.

Developed by researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China and Wuhan University, the new photoelectrode structure achieves high solar hydrogen production efficiency in a half-cell configuration and stable hydrogen production for more than 800 hours at high current density. It also extends the lifespan of the photoelectrode from a few hours to several months, overcoming the efficiency and reliability issues faced by traditional photovoltaic hydrogen production devices.

The team developed a design suitable for mass production and added gold nanoparticles as a co-catalyst. This new approach improves the catalytic activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction, prevents gold nanoparticles from peeling off during the reaction, and prevents the catalytic activity from deteriorating.

According to the study, the new structure can be extended to other complex semiconductor and catalytic reaction systems. It is expected to play an important role in energy conversion and support global energy transition and sustainable development.
