The largest solar power plant in Europe opens at an airport
23.01.2025 | 12:35 |The largest solar power plant in Europe has been inaugurated at the Italian Fiumicino Airport in Rome. Thanks to this project, carbon emissions from airport operations will be reduced by more than 11,000 tons annually, according to Euronews.
Recently, the international Fiumicino Airport presented its new solar farm, located along the eastern side of runway No. 3. The 55,000 panels form the largest photovoltaic system in Europe.
The station was opened in the presence of Italy's Minister of Energy. As a result of this project, carbon emissions from the airport’s operations will be reduced by more than 11,000 tons annually.
According to Italy's Minister of Energy, Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin, such projects can also be implemented on many other sites, in addition to airports.
“These are places like abandoned quarries or areas between highways and railways. Italy has many plots of land that are not suitable for agriculture but can instead be repurposed for such projects” the minister noted.
Fiumicino International Airport serves nearly 50 million passengers annually and has been named the best airport in Europe for seven consecutive years. Authorities hope that this airport, along with the entire country, can become a model for the growth of the green economy worldwide.
