Hamilton equals the record of Schumacher, and Nadal – equates to Federer’s record

Lewis Hamilton won the Eiffel Grand Prix in the F1 World Championship. The Mercedes driver, with this victory, equaled Michael Schumacher’s record with 91 victories in Formula 1 races, to become only one race away, and he will surely break Michael Schumacher’s record soon.

With this win, Hamilton strengthened his position at the top of the drivers list, 69 points ahead of his Mercedes colleague Valtteri Bottas. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was second in the race. Australian Danielle Ricciardo, the Renault driver, came third, to climb to the podium for the first time.

Although Verstappen stole the point for fastest lap from Hamilton on the last lap of the race, Hamilton’s lead is close to three clear race victories with only six races remaining. A seventh world title – which would equal another Schumacher record – is beckoning.

Special Trophy for Hamilton

To honour the victory, the son of Schumacher, Mick, presented Hamilton with one of his father’s red helmets, which Schumacher wore during his F1 comeback with Mercedes in 2012. “Just seeing his dominance for so long, I don’t think anyone, and especially me, didn’t imagine that I’d be anywhere near Michael in terms of records,” said an emotional Hamilton.

Nadal was at his brilliant best from the very first point, playing dominant 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 win.

It took Nadal just 2 hours and 41 minutes to win. “Win here means everything to me,” said Nadal, who also marked his 100th single match win at the Roland Garros.

“Honest for me, I don’t think today about the 20th, equal Roger on this great number. For me, today is just a Roland Garros victory. Roland Garros means everything to me. I spent here most of the important moments in my tennis career,” Nadal said. “For me, just play her is true inspiration. The love story I have with this city and with this court is unforgettable.”

In the past 15 years, just few in the sports world has been nearly as confident as Nada’'s victory in the men’s singles at the French Open.
