 The transition to green energy in Turkmenistan: key ideas and initiatives on OGT-2024

The plenary session of the International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan" (OGT-2024) preceded a dialogue on the topic "Transition to green energy in Turkmenistan: preparation for the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement." The moderator of the dialogue was permanent coordinator of the UN Dmitry Shlapachenko, who emphasized the importance of discussing global energy challenges and opportunities for the country.

Director of Sustainable Energy at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Dario Liguti took part in the conversation. He focused on the need to develop an effective policy and strengthen the national potential for the transition to sustainable energy, which is especially important in the light of climate changes and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The UNEP consultant Megan Demeter, who presented the program for reducing methane emissions in Turkmenistan, was online, emphasizing the importance of this aspect in the context of a global climatic agenda.

Economist of the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Turkmenistan Vladimir Valetka spoke about the results of the country analysis concerning the financing needs for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13. His report became the basis for discussing possible areas of investment in sustainable energy and climate initiatives.

Vice-Rector for Research of the Turkmen State Energy Institute Aganiyaz Jumayev shared his vision of local initiatives in the field of green energy and a scientific approach to solving energy problems.

Director of Global Campaigns of the Clean Air Task Force James Turitto noted the importance of international cooperation in combating air pollution and introducing clean technologies.

Anna Lobanova, UNESCAP Energy Connectivity Expert, also joined the conversation online, focusing on Turkmenistan's participation in the ECO-REM project, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable energy solutions.

The Q&A session, which involved all speakers and participants in the dialogue, became a platform for an active exchange of views and proposals for further steps in the field of green energy in Turkmenistan.
