Oriented on making people closer

Ahead of this week’s crucial biodiversity summit with participation of world leaders, the UN is calling on the global community to take decisive actions.

“We don’t have time to wait. The loss of biodiversity, the loss of nature is unprecedented in human history,” said Elizabeth Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The Convention on Biological Diversity is an International Treaty agreed at the Earth Summit in Brazil in 1992. It pursues three aims: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of nature, and the fair and equitable sharing of genetic opportunities. In accordance with this Convention, the world’s countries in 2010 agreed on 20 targets for the conservation of biodiversity – from the conservation of species to the reduction of deforestation by 2020.

According to Ms.Mrema, discussions about a new document that will be based on previous experience, are underway. It should be ready for adoption at the 15th conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in China in 2021.

Special emphasis will be placed on the voice of young people, involving them in discussions on nature conservation and biodiversity.
