The head of Nokia made the first ever phone call with the effect of “total immersion”

The CEO of the Finnish company Nokia, Pekka Lundmark, made the world's first phone call using “immersive audio and video” technology.

In modern smartphones, sound is transmitted in monophonic form, which makes the sound flatter and less detailed. The new development improves the call quality with 3D audio with a surround sound effect and high detail. This technology will become part of the future 5G Advanced standard.

Pekka Lundmark made a call from a regular smartphone via the public 5G network to Stefan Lindström, responsible for digitalization and new technologies in Finland.

“We've demonstrated the future of voice calling,” Lundmark said after the call ended.

Nokia Technologies President Jenny Lukander believes this is the biggest advance in voice calling since the advent of monaural telephony, which is used today in smartphones and PCs.

In addition to immersive person-to-person calls, 5G Advanced can be used during teleconferencing to reflect the spatial location of participants.
