Amazon transmits data in space using laser at speeds of up to 100 Gbps

Amazon has successfully tested a space laser communications link between two prototype Project Kuiper Internet satellites. The company's press service reports this.

Amazon managed to establish data transmission and reception at speeds of up to 100 Gbit/s. Various data were transmitted and received via a laser channel at a distance of 1000 km, including imitation of purchases in online stores and viewing of high-resolution videos.

Laser communication between communications satellites in orbit will allow subscribers on Earth to exchange data with low delays. As a result, passengers on airplanes, cruise ships, and residents in remote locations will be able to receive fast Internet connections everywhere.

The Amazon Project Kuiper communications satellite constellation is being created as a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink service. Project Kuiper will begin deployment in the first half of 2024.
