Microsoft and Amazon Seek Sustainable Energy for AI
13.01.2025 | 11:50 |In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in technology, leading to a significant increase in energy consumption by data centers.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, electricity consumption in this area increased by 7% from 2014 to 2018, and by 18% from 2018 to 2023. It is projected that by 2028, this number will grow to 12% of the total electricity consumption in the country.
In response to these challenges, technology giants such as Microsoft and Amazon are actively seeking environmentally friendly energy sources for their operations. Microsoft has signed an agreement with Helion Energy to build a fusion power plant, which is expected to be completed by 2028. This agreement underscores the company's commitment to using advanced technologies to ensure sustainable energy supply.
Amazon, in turn, is developing projects related to nuclear energy and actively investing in renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power. Both companies are also working to improve the energy efficiency of their data centers by developing their own chips and optimizing equipment. These initiatives will not only help reduce their carbon footprint but also ensure a reliable energy supply for the growing demand for computing power.
