 Turkmen juniors have two silvers and a bronze at the Western Asian Chess Championship

Turkmen chess players completed their performance at the Western Asian Chess Championship among boys and girls under 20 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and won 3 medals in the overall standings.

In the main tournament with classical time control among girls, our chess players - FIDE master Lala Shohradova and student of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Education and Sports Ogulsurai Bayrambaeva scored 6 points out of 9 possible and took 4th and 5th places, respectively, losing 3rd place in additional indicators to the athlete from India Rindia V., who also scored 6 points.

The gold medal was won by the athlete from Kazakhstan, international master Zeynep Sultanbek, who scored 7 points, and the silver medal was won by the world champion among girls under 12 years old from Sri Lanka, Gunawardana Devindya Oshini, with 6.5 points.

Our compatriot candidate for master of sports Amanmuhammet Khommadov performed well in the junior tournament, scoring 6 points out of 9 possible and sharing 4-6 places. Amanmuhammet was also able to increase his Elo rating by 60 points. Three participants, who scored 6.5 points each, simultaneously claimed the gold medal. But according to additional indicators, international master from Sri Lanka Tilakaratne rose to the highest step of the podium. The second place was taken by international master from India Harshavardhan, and the 3rd place went to another local international master Da Silva.

On the last day of the championship, a blitz tournament was held, where Lala Shohradova took second place and added another medal to our team. Having scored 6 points out of 7 possible, Lala lost only to the unconditional winner of the championship - her rival from Kazakhstan, Zeynep Sultanbek, who won gold in all three categories.

The U20 national team has not competed internationally in recent years, and the West Asian Championship was the first international tournament for our juniors in several years. Despite this, our team showed a decent performance and won three medals (2 silver and 1 bronze). About 90 participants from 7 countries took part in the championship.
