UNESCO to map glaciers of Central Asian countries by 2025

UNESCO will map glaciers and subglacial lakes in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. This was stated by UNESCO Director General Audre Azule during the Astana International Forum in the capital of Kazakhstan, TASS reports.

"Since 2021, we have been working with four states in the region to provide a deeper understanding through science and in order to prepare for the possible overflow of mountain lakes due to the melting of glaciers," she said, calling on all involved countries in the region to conduct a risk assessment.

The UNESCO Director General also announced the launch, together with five countries of the region, of a major project in the field of monitoring the regional cryosphere — one of the geographical shells of the Earth characterized by the presence of ice. This will be the first kind of research that will allow you to get a deep understanding of glaciers, permafrost and snow resources.
