Ozone layer recovery is on schedule – study

The ozone layer of the planet Earth is being restored according to the scheduled plan — this is the conclusion reached by the UN-supported group of experts on the scientific assessment of the Montreal Protocol on Ozone-Depleting Substances of the Global Agreement on the Protection of the Earth's Ozone Layer, unep.org reports.

A report presented by a group of scientists says that the global phase-out of ozone-depleting chemicals is already benefiting efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

If the current policy continues, it is expected that by 2040 the ozone layer in the world will recover to values not seen since 1980 — the time of the appearance of the ozone hole.

"The impact of the Montreal Protocol on climate change mitigation cannot be overestimated. Over the past 35 years, he has become a true environmentalist," commented Meg Seki, Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat of the United Nations Environment Programme.
