French writer Annie Ernault has won the Nobel Prize in Literature. She received the award for "the boldness and surgical precision with which she exposes the origins, alienation and collective framework of personal memory."

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Frenchman Alain Aspe, American John Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger for research in the field of quantum mechanics, in particular for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell's inequalities, and leading the way in creating the science of quantum information.

Swedish scientist Svante Paabo won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his study of the genetic basis of human evolution.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the American scientists Caroline Bertozzi and Barry Sharpless, as well as to the Dane Morten Meldal for the method of rapid synthesis of chemical compounds.
