Presidents of Turkmenistan and South Korea set course for developing partnership
29.08.2025 | 23:15 |On August 29, a telephone conversation took place between President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae-myung. This was the first conversation between the heads of the two states since Lee Jae-myung took office in June this year.
During the conversation, President Lee Jae-myung expressed gratitude to the Turkmen side for its assistance in ensuring the safe evacuation of 59 Korean citizens from Iran through the territory of Turkmenistan in June. This gesture was regarded as an expression of goodwill and commitment to bilateral cooperation.
The presidents highly appreciated the current level of interaction. Particular attention was paid to the successful projects implemented in Turkmenistan by leading Korean companies such as Hyundai, Daewoo and LG. The parties noted the potential for further expansion of cooperation in the energy, mechanical engineering and other sectors. President Lee Jae-myung asked for support for Korean companies operating in the Turkmen market.
The presidents confirmed their commitment to developing cultural and humanitarian ties. It was noted that the Korean language is taught in universities in Turkmenistan, and regular Culture Days promote mutual understanding between peoples.
The parties also discussed cooperation at the regional level in the Central Asia – Republic of Korea format, which helps to intensify interaction in such areas as transport, ecology and healthcare. The presidents discussed preparations for the upcoming Central Asia – Republic of Korea summit, which Seoul plans to host next year.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov invited his Korean counterpart to take part in the international forum, which will be held in Ashgabat on December 12 and will be dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality.

Turkmenistan and the Republic of Korea have extensive experience in joint implementation of large-scale projects. Over the years, the following initiatives have been successfully implemented with the participation of leading Korean companies such as Hyundai, Daewoo and LG:
Gas chemical complex in the Balkan velayat: A project worth more than 3.4 billion US dollars, designed to produce 386 thousand tons of polyethylene and 81 thousand tons of polypropylene per year.
Commercial gas purification plant at the Galkynysh field: A project worth more than 1.484 billion US dollars, designed to annually purify 10 billion cubic meters of gas.
Complex in the structure of the Turkmenabat chemical plant: An initiative worth 682 million US dollars, aimed at producing 350 thousand tons of superphosphate and 100 thousand tons of ammonium sulfate per year.
