Turkmenistan on the way to a low-carbon economy
25.03.2022 | 20:41 |The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, together with the British Embassy and the office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Ashgabat, held an online meeting on the results of the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP26), held last November in British Glasgow.
The parties discussed the main steps to implement the decisions taken at COP26 and ways of cooperation in promoting the Glasgow Climate Pact.
The discussion was attended by representatives of ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, diplomatic missions in the country, UN agencies and other international organizations, Turkmen students.
New initiatives were announced on interaction between national and international partners in the field of combating climate change, accelerating the transition of Turkmenistan to a low-carbon sustainable economy.
Last week, the UN General Assembly spoke out in favor of the bicycle by adopting a resolution recognizing the importance of this tool for sustainable development and as an everyday means of transport.
The new resolution was adopted unanimously after being introduced by Turkmenistan, which highlighted the health benefits of active mobility and its important role in reducing transport emissions worldwide. In addition, it was noted that, especially in developing countries, the use of two wheels is more associated with sports than with transport.
Therefore, in order to change this cultural attitude, it is necessary to improve road safety by investing in urban infrastructure and implementing cross-cutting strategies in public policy. Therefore, the resolution calls on all Member States to "integrate cycling into public transport, urban and rural environments in developing and developed countries."
The resolution, while not binding, represents an important step forward for the Glasgow COP26 Transport Declaration and is a key tool in support of greater cycling and greater investment in mobility.
