Purchases of foreign soft drinks last year were reduced by 36.9%. Imports of processed fruits and vegetables, the production of which is increased by the Turkmen business inside the country every year, decreased by 42.4%. This was also facilitated by consumer confidence in domestic foodstuffs: domestically-produced means fresher and more ecofriendly than imported. Moreover, the price is more attractive.
The listed categories of goods were successfully substituted with domestic counterparts. Turkmen entrepreneurs have launched the production of a wide range of soft drinks - sweet soda, juices and drinking water. Fortified energy drinks, which are several times cheaper than foreign counterparts, have become very popular among the population.
Strong domestic brands have sprung up in the field of food products, which, in turn, gave incentives to development of the marketing and advertising industry in the country. Design studios have appeared that professionally start new Turkmen brands from scratch.
We are substituting import of clothes
In January-November 2020, Turkmenistan also reduced imports of clothes. There was a decrease in purchases of knitwear by 35.1% and footwear by 29.2% compared to the same period in 2019.
Over several years, the enterprises of the Ministry of Textile Industry of Turkmenistan have formed a comprehensive independent market of modern domestic clothes for all categories of the population. High-quality clothing such as formal suits, youth T-shirts and jeans, children’s textiles, has become available to any Turkmen citizen at the lowest prices.
Turkmen entrepreneurs have launched the production of clothing under various brands, which quickly gained recognition and popularity. Turkmen clothing brands are keeping abreast of the time, reflecting local and global fashion trends, flexibly responding to requests. Already in the first days after the introduction of the mask regime in Turkmenistan, many textile enterprises launched the production of protective masks complete with clothing.
Last year, after the establishment of the Ministry of Industry and Construction Production in Turkmenistan, the import of many types of building materials also significantly dropped. The purchases from abroad decreased as for varnishes and paints by 32.1%, caoutchouc, rubber and products made of them by 14.5%, and ceramic products by 9%.
Imports of cement, one of the basic building materials, decreased by 28.2% in January-November 2020. As ORIENT wrote earlier, cement production in Turkmenistan has grown by 89% over 12 years. Entrepreneurs are successfully increasing the production of other types of construction materials in the country owing to the growing extraction and processing of minerals.
Import substitution in petrochemicals and gas chemicals
The oil refining and gas processing industry has also achieved significant success in import substitution, thanks to which Turkmenistan in 11 months of 2020 reduced the purchase of foreign petroleum products with increased added value by 20.7% compared to January-November 2019. This was achieved due to the diversification of production in Turkmenistan with regard to various motor oils and other similar products.
Turkmenistan reduced imports of plastics products by 27.7% last year. This became one of the key results in the successful bringing to the full production capacity of the largest gas chemical complex in Central Asia in the Balkan Region of Turkmenistan. The facility manufactures polypropylene from natural gas, the raw material for many types of ecofriendly plastic products.
State-owned industrial enterprises, private factories and plants of Turkmenistan are achieving high success in the implementation of state programs for import substitution. Thanks to their operation, the national economy is diversifying at a rapid pace.
Conditions are created in Turkmenistan for development of more high-tech and competitive industries. And primarily the ordinary Turkmen consumer benefits from this. Goods are becoming cheaper, better quality and more affordable.
