The 9th training course “Caspian Sea - Sustainable Development and Management” starts on Monday, September 11 in Ashgabat. The ten-day seminar, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Caspian Sea Institute in cooperation with the International Ocean Institute, will bring together employees of various departments from all five Caspian countries.
The base venue for the event, which will be held in a hybrid format, will be the Archabil Hotel. The training is conducted in English and includes case analysis, briefings, exercises, practical tasks and classes, familiarization with new tools for spatial management and planning, and discussions on the topic.
Course participants will study the historical background, socio-economic situation and political context of the Caspian Sea region, its environmental problems and opportunities, consider maritime zones and legal regimes affecting their use, fluctuations in Caspian water levels and weigh the existing regulatory framework, including the Tehran Convention and its supporting protocols, as well as other regional agreements.
The course agenda also includes issues of maritime transport and international regulation of shipping safety, financial mechanisms, fisheries, stock protection and cooperation in the fight against poaching.
