The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is considering a regional project titled “Developing New Generation Border Crossing Points” for the countries participating in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program. According to the bank, cited by Trend, the initiative involves Azerbaijan as well as Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The project is expected to be financed through a Special Technical Assistance Fund amounting to $1 million.

The initiative aims to support CAREC countries in developing next-generation border crossing points with a focus on climate resilience and the implementation of innovative solutions.

Within the framework of the project, several priority border crossing points will be prepared, including feasibility studies and comprehensive assessments, as well as the development of a new approach to project preparation and implementation. The project will also include activities aimed at strengthening the capacity of CAREC countries in the development and operation of border crossing points.

Implementation of the project is expected to improve infrastructure and procedures at border crossing points, reducing the time and costs of trade along the CAREC transport network. The modernization of border crossings will be a key outcome of the initiative, facilitating international cargo movement and strengthening regional cooperation.
