UNDP brings together Turkmenistan’s youth to explore climate solutions on the occasion of United Nations Day

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan, in partnership with the NGO “Yash Tebigatchy” (“Young Naturalist”) and other partners, held a youth conference on climate solutions and environmental innovation, bringing together young activists, environmentalists, university students and young professionals to explore innovative approaches to addressing climate challenges.
Held on 24 October at the International Scientific and Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, the conference provided a platform for exchanging ideas, developing leadership skills and exploring how digital technologies, science and engineering innovations can contribute to sustainable development. Through thematic sessions, participants learned about environmental diplomacy and discussed how young people can contribute to achieving global climate goals at the local level.

The conference was organized within the framework of two initiatives: the UNDP\UNEP project supporting the preparation of Turkmenistan’s Fifth National Communication on Climate Change under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the regional project of UNDP and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) “Addressing Marine Litter and Marine Plastics – A Systemic Approach in the Caspian Sea,” implemented with financial support from the Russian Federation.
The conference was part of a wider programme of youth and environmental activities held to mark United Nations Day, bringing together environmental awareness, physical activity and cultural exchange.

On 22 October, the Green Heritage tree-planting initiative took place at the Technology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan. Participants planted trees, making a practical contribution to preserving the local ecosystem and expanding green spaces.
On 23 October, a youth eco-marathon was held in the 15 Years of Turkmenistan’s Independence Park, with the support of the Run Rush running community. The event promoted healthy lifestyles and encouraged participants to adopt more environmentally responsible practices.

All the above-mentioned activities were supported by UNDP’s project “Developing National Capacity of Turkmenistan through Improving Regulatory Environment towards Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building Sector (TEESB),” funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
