Kazakhstan will expand the Zhanaozen-Turkmenistan border highway to four lanes, while Ashgabat is completing key projects on the opposite side, transforming the deserted route into a modern logistics hub.

According to the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, the modernization of the 164-kilometer section to the Temir-Baba border crossing will be completed in 2026. This decision coincides with Turkmenistan's infrastructure projects along the same logistics route.

Oncoming Traffic: What Is Turkmenistan Doing?

Turkmenistan is advancing construction ahead of schedule:

Garabogazgol Bridge: This crucial 354-meter bridge on the Turkmenbashi-Garabogaz-Kazakhstan Border Highway opened in November 2025. It will eliminate a bottleneck on the route to the border.

Turkmenbashi-Kazakhstan Highway: Work is underway on a new 225-kilometer, four-lane highway. It will be a natural extension of the Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi high-speed highway.

Garabogaz Customs Post: A large-scale reconstruction of the terminal has been completed to expedite the passage of heavy trucks, which, combined with the new road, will cut travel time from Turkmenbashi to Zhanaozen in half.

Economic Impact

Synchronous road modernization on both sides of the border transforms the Caspian route into the shortest transit route for cargo from the Gulf countries and India to Russia and Europe. For residents of Lebap and Balkan, this means new jobs in service, logistics, and border trade.
