Google Chrome introduces vertical tabs: Making it easier to work with hundreds of open pages
Google Chrome is preparing to introduce a new feature that will allow users to display open tabs not horizontally (as it has been for 17 years) but vertically. This innovation aims to significantly simplify navigation for users who regularly work with dozens or hundreds of open pages.
Vertical tab display solves the problem in which tabs become too small when many pages are open, turning switching between them into a search for the right page.
The vertical layout will be implemented as a separate panel (frame) inside the browser window.
• Customization: The user will be able to place the panel on the left or right side and adjust its width.
• Convenience: The panel will show not only the icon but also the full title of each open page. Tabs can be scrolled with the mouse wheel.
• Features: A search panel for tabs will be available, along with the familiar tab grouping function.
To enable the new mode, users won’t have to dig deep into settings — simply right-click on the tab bar and choose the new position (left, right, or top).
The feature is currently available only in test builds (Canary), but it is expected to appear soon in Chrome’s stable release.
Although this is a new feature for Chrome, the idea of vertical tabs does not belong to Google. This option has existed for many years in competing browsers such as Vivaldi and Firefox. Microsoft Edge and Brave also offer a similar feature.
Despite borrowing the idea, the introduction of vertical tabs will greatly improve the usability of Chrome, the world’s most popular browser, which holds more than 73% of the global market.
