The Presidency of the CIS has passed to Tajikistan
Starting from January 1, 2025, Tajikistan has officially begun fulfilling the role of Chairman in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This is a significant milestone for the country, which previously held the presidency in 2011 and 2018.
During its presidency, Tajikistan has planned 113 events to be held throughout the year. The primary focus will be on improving the operations of the CIS, including discussions on security issues and economic cooperation. Tajikistan’s President, Emomali Rahmon, emphasized that one of the key tasks will be strengthening cooperation among CIS countries in addressing security risks and threats.
Tajikistan's Prime Minister, Kohir Rasulzoda, at a meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government held in December in Moscow, noted that Tajikistan advocates for the removal of existing trade barriers between CIS countries. The development of economic cooperation within the union's space will be one of the country's main priorities. Additionally, the country plans to achieve an agreement and the signing of a cooperation agreement among CIS heads of government on the development of heavy machine engineering.
An important cultural event planned for this year will be the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Furthermore, a joint event by the CIS and the United Nations is scheduled for September 2025 in New York.
As a country that actively promotes proposals aimed at preserving glaciers from the negative effects of climate change on the international stage, Tajikistan will initiate the adoption of a statement by CIS heads of state on this matter.
