Trends in architecture and urban planning: the smart city Arkadag sets the tone for innovation

On 4 November, within the framework of the International Conference “Construction, Industry and Energy of Turkmenistan” (CIET 2024), a session entitled “Modern Trends in Architecture and Urban Planning: Smart City Arkadag - City of Future and Opportunities” was held. The participants discussed a number of current projects and initiatives aimed at the development of urban infrastructure in Turkmenistan.

The focus was primarily on new projects planned for the next phase of the construction of Arkadag city, including the creation of medical industrial clusters. This reflects the country's commitment to integrating innovations in healthcare and developing modern infrastructure to serve the population.

New projects in Ashgabat were also discussed, in particular the “Ashgabat City” concept, which is designed to give a new vector of development to the capital and create comfortable conditions for residents and visitors.

The speakers of the session emphasized the new quality standards in construction that will be implemented within the framework of these projects. An important aspect of the discussion was the requirements for seismic resistance in building construction, which is critically important for ensuring the safety of structures in seismically active regions.

Among the participants of the session were: Chairman of the State Committee for Construction of Arkadag City under the President of Turkmenistan, Deryageldi Orazov, Minister of Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan Abdulla Geldiyev, Mayor of Ashgabat Rahym Gandymov, Managing Director of the Ukrainian company “Interbudmontazh” Vladimir Petruk, Director of the Turkish company “Asos proses makina sanayi ve ticaret A. S.” Onder Filiz, Senior Vice President of the German company “MAN Truck and Bus SE” Thomas Hemmerich, Corporate Director for Quality Control of the French company “Bouygues Batiment International” in Turkmenistan Teddy Sutomo.

In his speech, Minister of Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan Abdulla Geldiyev emphasized the importance of the economic reforms being carried out in the country, which contribute to the development of the construction industry and the introduction of modern technologies.

The Minister emphasized that the International Exhibition "Construction, Industry, Energy – 2024" demonstrated achievements in construction and new technologies being implemented to ensure the seismic resistance of buildings. He also highlighted the need to improve the quality of construction materials and to work on new projects that will meet international standards.

Geldiyev highlighted the large-scale projects being implemented across the country, including the creation of modern medical clusters and innovative residential complexes.

In his address, the Mayor of Ashgabat, Rahym Gandymov, emphasized that new cultural, educational, and medical institutions are actively being built in the capital, all of which meet modern requirements. He highlighted the importance of creating conditions for comfortable living for residents, including new schools, kindergartens, and medical centers equipped with modern technology.

In addition, the Mayor spoke about the development of sports infrastructure, which includes more than 30 sports complexes and stadiums, as well as the achievements of Ashgabat, which has been recognized as the city of new sports opportunities. He also emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of sustainable and “smart” urban planning, which are being applied in the design of new facilities.

Gandymov assured that all new buildings and structures will be created taking into account the best world practices and local climatic conditions, which will ensure the safety and comfort of residents. He expressed hope for further development of the city as one of the leading centers in the international arena.

In his speech, Teddy Sutomo, Director of Quality Control at Bouygues Turkmen, emphasized the importance of quality in construction as a key element of successful projects. He noted that quality is not just a step in the process, but the foundation of everything that is built.

Sutomo shared that the Bouygues Turkmen team strictly adheres to high quality standards at every stage, from design to construction. He also emphasized that the company uses only the best materials and employs qualified specialists, ensuring the reliability and durability of the facilities being constructed.

Furthermore, he spoke about the implementation of modern technologies and sustainable practices in projects, including the use of tools such as HoloLens and LIDAR, as well as software for quality management. Sutomo assured that through innovative solutions, the company aims to ensure the highest standards of quality and efficiency in its work.

The session demonstrated Turkmenistan's commitment to integrating modern technologies into urban planning and architecture, creating a foundation for sustainable development and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
