China's Nature Reserves have launched a campaign to protect migratory bird routes
As winter approaches, thousands of flocks of migratory birds begin their migration to countries with warmer climates. In this regard, conservation organizations in China have launched a campaign to protect and preserve routes of migratory birds. This was reported by CGTN.
Thus, in the National Nature Reserve located in the delta of the Yellow (Huang he) River in Shandong province, investments in technology have been increased, and measures have been taken to protect the environment in order to improve conditions for the birds on their stopover and breeding during the migration season.
Another important point along the migratory path of birds is the Hongjiannao Nature Reserve in Shaanxi Province. It is home to the largest freshwater lake in Chinese desert. However, in recent years, human activities have affected the condition of the water area and water quality. Therefore, local authorities have decided to relocate residents to other areas.
As noted by He Heping, the director of the Hongjiannao National Nature Reserve Administration, there were previously over 530 households within and near the reserve’s boundaries, with a total of 613 hectares of agricultural land. As part of the resettlement program that has been implemented since 2016, 487 households have been relocated, and approximately 530 hectares of land have been transferred to the management of the reserve.
Thanks to these measures, as well as the implementation of projects for the restoration of the lake's ecosystem, experts have noted a significant increase in the number of bird populations. Advanced monitoring methods help ensure the safety and success of the annual migrations of these feathered creatures. Thus, China places great importance on wildlife conservation and the high-quality development of the country’s nature reserves.
Over 1,500 bird species inhabit China. This accounts for 13% of the total number of bird species worldwide. Among these, more than 800 are migratory. Additionally, four of the nine major migratory routes for birds on the planet pass through China.
