Organizers of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo have announced that enough plastic has been collected to create eco-podiums for the award ceremony. In total, there were collected 24.5 tons of used plastic, including from the oceans, and about 400 thousand bottles of detergents. For the first time in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, members of the public participated in the collection of plastic for the manufacture of podiums. This project, launched in June 2019, aims to organize the most Eco-friendly Games in history as part of the “Be better together” concept. The Japanese team will wear uniforms made from recycled clothing, and the winners’ medals will be made from used electronic devices. Also, 100% of the electricity used at the facilities will come from renewable sources. In a recent speech, IOC President Thomas Bach noted that the Tokyo Olympics will not be pandemic games, they will be competitions appropriate for a post-pandemic world.
