Turkmen students dominate the Tatarstan educational services market for foreigners

On Tatiana's Day, or the Day of Russian Students, which was celebrated on January 25, Tatar-inform presented its annual overview of the geography of foreign student flows, which clearly defined the "expansion" of Turkmens in the educational services market of Kazan.
Currently, 147.3 thousand students study in Tatarstan universities. There are 22.7 thousand foreign students. They came from 15 countries of the near and 111 countries of the far abroad. However, more than 50% of the total number of foreigners falls on the countries of Central Asia and the Middle East.
This year, Tatar-inform interviewed only three leading universities in Kazan: Kazan Federal University (KFU) and two national research universities - technical, training personnel for machine and aircraft engineering (KNITU-KAI) and technological (KNITU), where future specialists in the field of chemistry, petrochemistry and biotechnology study. These universities accumulate as the largest number of "external" students.

According to KFU, in total, during the admission campaign of 2023/2024, more than 9.5 thousand people were admitted to the university for bachelor's and specialist degrees, of which 1.7 thousand were foreign students. The main part of the foreign contingent of KFU is traditionally made up of citizens from Central Asian countries and China. And at the same time, the number of students from Turkmenistan has increased significantly: 593 students were admitted a year earlier, and 936 in 2023.
In 2023, 1,025 foreigners entered KNITU. In the country context, Turkmenistan's dominance in KNRTU looks absolute: 725 students. Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan follow by a wide margin. And the picture hasn't changed for years.

1023 citizens of Turkmenistan were admitted to the KAI in 2023, whereas a year earlier only ... 65 people.
"This is mainly due to the recent recognition of the KNITU-KAI diploma at the state level in Turkmenistan," explained such a leap at the university. For comparison, only 45 people came from Kazakhstan, and 23 students from Tajikistan, which closed the top three.
