Iran and Uzbekistan may increase trade through transit via Turkmenistan

Head of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mining and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Gholam-Hossein Shafei suggested that Uzbekistan solve the transport problem with the help of Turkmenistan to expand trade relations with Iran.
He noted that the main goal of ICCIMA for this year is to increase the current trade turnover between Iran and Uzbekistan by $400 million - up to $1 billion.
“In this regard, there are some problems, the most important of which is the development of transport cooperation, especially in the railway sector. This is a serious obstacle to the expansion of trade between the two countries and causes great losses to the traders of the two countries. If the problem is not resolved with the cooperation of third countries, including Turkmenistan, the problem will persist,” Shafei said. He also called on the economic operators of both sides to invest in the projects of the international North-South transit corridor.
The head of ICCIMA said this on Saturday at the Iranian-Uzbek business forum, timed to coincide with the visit of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Tehran, Tehran Times reports.
According to the ICCIMA portal, the forum was attended by high-ranking officials from both countries, including Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade of Iran Abbas Ali-Abadi and Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan Laziz Kudratov.
The event was also attended by representatives of 50 different Uzbek companies.
