Turkmenistan at SPIEF-2023 discusses the creation of a market for carbon units

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) started this Wednesday and will last until June 17. The main part of the business program unfolded on Thursday. This year, more than 17 thousand participants from 130 countries and territories came to the forum, including high-ranking officials from more than 15 states.
The Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Serdar Joraev is also taking part in the SPIEF, in particular, in such a thematic sector as "The world economy in the era of a global turning point". A separate discussion, at which the Minister spoke today, was devoted to carbon regulation and the creation of a market for the circulation of carbon units in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Low-carbon energy is becoming one of the key drivers of industrial development. At the same time, the challenges that have arisen contribute to changing existing approaches. The main trend is the formation of a market for the circulation of carbon units (a carbon unit is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that was prevented due to the implementation of a particular climate project).

The participants of the discussion discussed the prospects for creating a common international carbon market within the framework of the Paris Agreement mechanisms, touching upon the issues of dialogue with business in this area, the participation of banks in the climate agenda and the role of special financial instruments, the organization of monitoring and expertise on emissions, their standardization, digitization of the value of ecosystems, etc.

Serdar Jorayev told the experts about Turkmenistan's efforts to transform the national economy in a green way, attract financial resources for the implementation of climate projects, and develop the country's international cooperation on this track. According to the Minister, the creation of a single carbon market in Central Asia will stimulate the introduction of new technologies and investment activity in the region.

Among the speakers were the Vice-Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Advisor/Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on Climate Issues of Gazprombank, heads of Sberbank, the African Export-Import Bank, the companies "Russian Environmental Operator", "RusHydro", Director of the Institute for Strategic Cooperation between China and Russia of Tsinghua University.
